When AubreyMaxwell’s Robbie McMillan and Marcus Keller contemplated the design for Residence 61B in the 181 Fremont building, they took a unique approach—boil the essence of the project down into three core elements: architectural details of the iconic building; innovative, yet timeless furniture; and a world-class art collection.
“Art is a central part of our work and a key aspect of the character and soul of the space.” — Robbie McMillan
Designed by Heller Manus Architects, 181 Fremont is a state-of-the-art tower and one of California’s tallest, most structurally-advanced buildings.
Keeping the innovative building front-of-mind, AubreyMaxwell focused their efforts on utilizing a single brand to outfit the entire residence. They chose B&B Italia / Maxalto exclusively because of the distinctive furniture’s exceptional quality and enduring elegance. The floors of the residence are blanketed in hand-knotted rugs entirely from Italian brand, cc-tapis. Arkitektura’s Contract Division was pleased to collaborate with incredible talent on this inspired project.
Last, but certainly not least, came the selection of art. AubreyMaxwell collaborated with art advisor Holly Baxter to showcase the PODIUM art collection, which features 20 pieces by highly-regarded, international black artists. The exhibition contains painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and video-based work, and can be viewed here.
